the Bearcats did not match up very well with the different personnel groupings the Bulldogs were making on offense. Therefore the Bulldogs were able to take advantage of the Bearcats defense by having 4 speedy wide receivers, while the Bearcats were in their base defense. There were situations where penalties had the Bulldogs backed up almost 25 to 35 yards to convert a first down and they would managed to convert very easily. The two inside slot receivers were eating both the Will and Sam linebacker for lunch because they couldn't athletically matched their speed. They probably average 18-20 yards per catch. In the first half the bulldog quarterback was able to stay in the pocket for at least 3.0-3.5 seconds without any pressure from the Bearcats four-man pass rush. While the Bearcats secondary were trying to deal with receivers making two or three moves down the field due to a lack of pass rush. The Bulldogs seize the moment on those opportunities and made the Bearcats pay big time with long touchdown scoring strikes. On the other hand the bulldog defense did an awesome job pressuring the quarterback and stopping the run. On the Bearcats opening drive they managed toget the ball to the bulldog 10 yard line very easily, then self-destructed with back-to-back sacks losing 20 yards and needing to kick a field goal which was short.
The second half was a much different football game the Bearcats started bringing extra pressure in getting to the Bulldogs quarterback. Something got into them and they started playing like a tiger backed into a corner, pressuring the quarterback with five and six rushers. That adjustment really rendered the Bulldogs passing game ineffective for most of the second half, because the quarterback had to rush throws due to pressure. Along with pressuring the quarterback they also were able to stop the running game as well. However the opportunities that were created by the defense were not able to be taken advantage of by their offense due to the bulldog stifling defense. While the Bulldogs were somewhat packing their bags preparing to go to Yakima, the Bearcats claws and scratch their way back into the football game late in the fourth quarter. They managed to get within 10 points, [score Bulldogs 33-Bearcats 23] with just under 5 min. remaining in the fourth quarter. The Bearcats tried an onside kick, which was scooped up by the Bulldogs and ran in for a touchdown making the score 40-23. The Bearcats would score again just under 2 min. remaining making the score 40-30 and the Bulldogs would run out the remaining time.
Analysis: though the Bulldogs are a better team athletically, had the Bearcats played with the gambling mentality they played with in the second half, in my opinion the game would have been much closer. You simply cannot give a quarterback all the time in the world to find a receiver, and you cannot especially allow enough time for receivers to make two and three moves and expect a defender to stay with them. All of those things are a recipe for disaster and will leave you scratching your head all off-season.
